Japan Airlines has agreed on a new deal for 21 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft as part of a fleet renewal programme.

We look forward to carrying our passengers in the utmost safety and comfort and to moving closer to our 2050 carbon-neutral goals, thanks to a combination of these super-efficient aircraft, operational innovations and new fuel-saving technologies."

Norwegian to buy 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.........

Norwegian Air Shuttle is going to order 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets the budget airline confirmed this week. It has agreed in principle with planemaker Boeing to buy 50 and have options to buy a further 30 of the jets.

According to the deal, the 50 aircraft are due to be delivered between 2025 and 2028, at a schedule closely corresponding to current aircraft lease expirations. This is to ensure the airline can have limited growth in terms of aircraft numbers.

The purchase agreement still has;t been finalised yet and there could be some changes along the way, before the deal is fully finalised which is not expected much before the end of June. The true financing of the deal has yet to be agreed and the firm is working on sale and leaseback deals as well as loans and other arrangements, which may prove to be difficult under present circumstances.

Svein Harald Øygard, Chair of the Board of Norwegian said: “This is a landmark deal that sets out a path whereby Norwegian will own a large share of its fleet. This will result in lower all-in costs and increased financial robustness, enabling us to further solidify our Nordic stronghold. The deal also allows us to serve our customers with state-of-the-art aircraft that can run increasingly on sustainable aviation fuel,”

Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian, commented: “The overall terms achieved are attractive for Norwegian, and the deal fits well with our long-term fleet strategy and route program. It will enable us to serve our customers with modern fuel-efficient aircraft with the latest technology, significantly reducing our carbon footprint. The deal will also strengthen the company’s equity considerably, further solidifying Norwegian’s financial position,”

International Airlines Group Finalizes Agreement for Up to 150 Boeing's troubled MAX Jets.......

Photo Boeing

Boeing and International Airlines Group confirmed this week that had struck a deal for up to 150 of the firm's troubled MAX jets.  This comprises of an option for 100 jets and a firm order of 50 aircraft, comprising of 737 MAX 8 and MAX 10 models.

Both the aircraft manufacturer and IAG are seeking to mislead passengers, by dropping the MAX mantle from all publicity over the deal, referring to the planes by just the designation of 737-8 and 737-10.

IAG had been talking with a European planemaker about a possible mass order however when Airbus refused to reduce by half the cost of each airline, the airline group, which includes British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia headed to the U.S. for a deal.

"The addition of new Boeing 737s is an important part of IAG´s short-haul fleet renewal," said Luis Gallego, IAG´s chief executive, who is banking on these jets to enable the group to be net-zero by 2050. Something which many aviation analysts say is not possible.

IAG is also going to be reducing seat-pitch by cramming in 200 seats to the 737 MAX 8-200 jets which would tie in with rumoured plans to turn all its airlines into a more low-cost model. IAG has said it will seat 230 people in the 737 MAX 10 jets.

"IAG has invested in a sustainable and profitable future, as both variants will significantly lower operating costs and CO2 emissions," said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Today's agreement for up to 150 aeroplanes, including 100 options, is a welcome addition of the 737 to IAG´s short-haul fleets and reflects our commitment to support the Group's continued network recovery and future growth with Boeing's unrivalled family of aeroplanes."

The 737 MAX variety of aircraft has a chequered history since the two fatal crashes cost the lives of nearly 360 passengers and saw a grounding of the type for nearly two years while Boeing tried to correct the design flaws and manufacturing issues that lead to the two disasters. According to manufacturing reports, some of the MAX jets currently being produced are showing an increased number of flaws or issues as Boeing ramps up production.

Virgin Australia to buy four Boeing 737 MAX jets for fleet expansion and phase out Fokker F100s.....

Virgin Australia Group has confirmed today that it is going to add four new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to its fleet as part of its renewal programme that will also see it phase out Fokker F100 aircraft. The airline says these new 737 MAX 8 aircraft will start to enter service in February next year.

Since its re-launch, in November 2020 the Virgin Australia Group issued plans to grow its 737 fleet by over 50%, from 58 to 88 planes. Currently, the airline flies operates a fleet of 10 Fokker F100 aircraft across its operations in Western Australia, these ageing aircraft will be gradually transitioned out and replaced by 737-700s from the first quarter of 2023.

Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka said the fleet renewal programme is part of a broader growth strategy,  "We are on track to return to 100% of pre-COVID domestic capacity by June this year and expect to well exceed those levels by year’s end, and our resources sector and contract flying in WA is in high demand. This investment in our fleet reflects the increased demand we are experiencing in all parts of Virgin Australia."

A future phase of the carrier's development will see it acquire an additional 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft which will transport more passengers for a similar amount of fuel to the current 737 NG aircraft.

Hrdlicka said: "We have a younger average fleet age than other airlines operating in the Australian market and we are in a good position to phase out our older F100 aircraft for more fuel-efficient options.  Equipping our WA operation with more modern and efficient 737 aircraft positions us to grow and to better compete in the resources sector and contract flying market across Australia.  It also enables Virgin Australia to improve fleet utilisation across the Group.

Existing F100 flight and cabin crew, VARA engineering and support staff and corporate and operations functions will be progressively trained to operate and maintain a 737 NG fleet, both as F100 aircraft are retired and as the airline continues to grow its WA resources sector and contract flying business."

In addition to its 737 fleet, Virgin Australia Group will also continue to operate Airbus A320 aircraft as part of its resources sector and contract flying operations.
