The third runway is operational at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport

On September 19, 2019, the third runway (Runway-3) was commissioned at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. The official opening took place with the participation of the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on environmental issues, ecology and transport S.B. Ivanov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation E.I. Dietrich, Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency A.V. Neradko, Governor of the Moscow Region A.Y. Vorobyov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC “SIA” A.A. Ponomarenko, the leadership of specialized organizations and airlines.

Alexander Neradko presented Alexander Ponomarenko a new certificate of conformity of the Sheremetyevo airdrome. Also, the participants of the event witnessed the first landing of the aircraft on Runway-3. It was an “Aeroflot” flight SU 019 St. Petersburg - Moscow. The first aircraft with passengers on board on the new runway was greeted with a traditional aviation salute - a water arch.

Addressing the audience, the head of the Ministry of Transport emphasized that the opening of the runway is a long-awaited event for the entire Moscow aviation hub. “Today we are witnessing the commissioning of infrastructure of a completely new quality. Two runways in Sheremetyevo operate in dependent mode. The distance between them does not allow two planes to land and take off simultaneously. The third runway is absolutely independent and makes it possible to land and raise aircraft absolutely without regard to others”, - he said.

According to Evgeny Dietrich, thanks to the new runway, the airport will increase the airdrome capacity from 60-65 takeoff and landing operations per hour to 90. At the same time, Runway-3 is equipped with ICAO category 3.

The Minister thanked the Governor of the Moscow Region Andrei Vorobyov for the help that was provided during the implementation of the project.

In turn, Sergei Ivanov noted the long-awaited event for the entire transport industry. “I want to thank with all my heart the Ministry of Transport, the Federal Air Transport Agency, and the administration of the Sheremetyevo airdrome, which will now live a new life. The importance of Runway-3 for Sheremetyevo Airport, for Moscow and for Russian aviation is difficult to overestimate”, - said the Special Representative of the President. He also recalled the difficulties encountered during the construction of the runway related to the transfer of gas pipelines, oil products pipelines, electricity networks, as well as the relocation of residents and the elimination of an abandoned landfill with garbage. “Of course, all these factors affected the timing of the construction of the strip in the direction of increase. Three ministers of transport were closely involved in it, who made every effort to make this project a reality”, - Sergei Ivanov emphasized.

“The third runway is the most complicated technical object of the airfield infrastructure, necessary to expand the capacity of the Sheremetyevo International Airport. The commissioning of the new runway, construction of the new Terminal C and a number of other facilities together create favorable conditions for achieving our strategic goal by 2026 to enter the top 10 largest airports in the world with a capacity of about 100 million passengers per year”, - said Alexander Ponomarenko.

Thanks to the new independent runway, Sheremetyevo significantly increased its throughput and became the first airport in Russia with three runways. The modern airfield and terminal infrastructure of Sheremetyevo opens up new wide opportunities for long-term growth and development for base carriers and new airlines.

Runway-3 will remove infrastructure restrictions, create conditions to ensure increasing demand for air transportation at Sheremetyevo Airport and the possibility of restoring the operational suitability of existing elements of the airfield, including the planned reconstruction of Runway-1, while maintaining and further increasing the volume of air transportation.

Runway-3 has dimensions 3200x60 m, which allows landing of all types of aircraft, both Russian and foreign.

During the construction of Runway-3, an innovative solution for the construction of a bridge crossing designed for aircraft traffic was implemented for Russia. This is the first project of this kind in the country. The bridge design will be able to withstand all types of modern and promising aircraft, as well as their modifications, including the A-380.

The Runway-3 complex at Sheremetyevo Airport has modern production treatment facilities for domestic and surface wastewater in accordance with state regulatory requirements and environmental standards.

In the future, taking into account the commissioning of new passenger terminals, Sheremetyevo Airport plans to enter the league of the largest aviation hubs in the world and strengthen the status of the main transit hub between Europe and Asia.

It is noteworthy that 60 years ago, on August 11, 1959, at 9.45 Moscow time, the first flight landed on the only then runway of the Sheremetyevo airfield (formerly the central airfield of the USSR Air Force). The Tu-104 airliner delivered 100 passengers from Leningrad. The glorious history of the Sheremetyevo International Airport began with this event.

The construction of the new runway complex (Runway-3) of the Sheremetyevo International Airport was carried out in the period from 2011 to 2017 within the framework of the federal target program “Development of the transport system of Russia (2010-2021)”, and since 2018 - within the framework of the state program of the Russian Federation “Development of the transport system”. The state customer of the project was the Federal Air Transport Agency, Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Administration of Civil Airports (Aerodromes)”, the general designer - FUE GPI and NII GA “Aeroproject”, the general contractor LLC Transstroymehanizatsiya. Funding for the construction of Runway-3 was carried out from the federal budget.

The implementation of the Runway-3 project was associated with a significant amount of work on preparing the construction site, including changing and restructuring the Klyazma and Alba river channels, restructuring engineering and transport communications (oil and gas pipelines, water pipelines, power lines, roads) passing through the construction site, its release from residential and other facilities.

The Transstroymehanizatsiya company as a whole carried out the construction of the Runway-3 complex facilities using the parallel method of organizing work, taking into account modern effective technological methods. During the construction work, measures were taken to protect the environment. In particular, mechanical assembly technologies were used with further utilization of pollutants and technologies for biological treatment and soil regeneration.

The construction of the Runway-3 complex with a size of 3200x60 m was completed, equipped with radio-technical flight support facilities and light-signaling equipment, a taxiway network, a command and control station combined with a start-up and rescue station, a patrol-production and patrol road, an airfield complex fencing, and treatment facilities surface drains, other objects.
