Manchester Airport crowned UK's best at prestigious travel industry awards

On Monday evening, Manchester won the accolade of the UK and Ireland’s best airport at the Travel Trade Gazette annual awards in London, which is judged by the travel trade and industry experts.

The UK’s third-largest airport beat off competition from fellow nominees Birmingham, Bristol, Luton and Belfast City airports.

The prize was handed over by actress and comedienne Jennifer Saunders, and judges praised the airport on the wealth of engaging activity to celebrate its 80th birthday, its ongoing £1bn transformation and the outreach and incentives it does with travel agents across the UK.

Stephen Turner, Commercial Director at Manchester Airport, said: “I’m sure I speak for the whole airport when I say how delighted we are to win such an esteemed accolade, especially at a time when so much is going on at Manchester. Not only are we spending £1bn to transform the airport to continue to enhance the experience for all of our 29 million passengers, we also continue to add routes to key global destinations. This delivers a huge economic boost to the whole of the North.

“The travel trade is so important to us, so I’d like to also thank members of the trade for their ongoing support and enthusiasm for Manchester Airport.”

Representatives of the airport (pictured here) collected the award at a glittering ceremony which took place at the Lyceum Theatre and Savoy Hotel in London. The award comes off the back of a year of continued growth for the Northern hub, which in the last 12 months has added a wealth of routes to the likes of Addis Ababa and Los Angeles to name a few.

Works on its £1bn transformation continue at great pace with the first phase opened in April this year and the terminal extension set to open in 2020.

The TTG Travel Awards are recognised as being the toughest to win in the UK and Irish travel trade, celebrating the very best suppliers and travel agents in the business.
