Icelandair saw passenger numbers rise 20% in June.

In June 2023, the number of passengers travelling with the carrier was 518,527, a 20% increase since June last year. A total of 1.8 million passengers travelled with Icelandair for the first six months of the year, 31% more than at the same time last year.

Passengers on international flights were 493,228 in June, compared to 406,881 in June 2022, an increase of 21%. Thereof, 43% were travelling to Iceland, 13% from Iceland and 44% were via passengers. The load factor was 86% and improved by 2.7 percentage points compared to June last year on 22% more capacity.  Demand was particularly strong on North American routes with a load factor close to 90%, which is the highest it has ever been in the month of June. On-time performance on international flights was 67%, which is below the Company’s goals.  

Passengers on domestic flights were 25,299. The load factor on domestic flights was 78.8% and on-time performance was 91%, significantly improving year-on-year.

Freight, measured in Freight Ton Kilometers increased by 51%, driven by an increase in transit freight following the addition of two wide-body B767-300 freighter aircraft. Sold block hours in the leasing operation increased 5%.

Icelandair orders 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft

The national airline of Iceland, Icelandair has placed a firm order for 13 Airbus A321XL aircraft as well as completed long-term lease deals with SMBC Aviation Capital Limited, for four new Airbus A321LR aircraft, scheduled to be delivered from Airbus in the fourth quarter of 2024.  


The carrier origionally announced back in April this year that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purchase of 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft with purchase rights for additional 12 aircraft. 

With its extra long range, the A321XLR will allow Icelandair to seize new market opportunities. The aircraft will also enable the airline to reduce its operating costs, support its sustainability targets and at the same time offer its passengers the best in cabin comfort.

The A321XLR is the next evolutionary step from the A320neo which responds to market needs for even more range and payload, creating more value for the airlines. It will deliver an unprecedented Xtra Long Range of up to 4,700nm – 15% more range than the A321LR and with 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared with previous generation competitor aircraft, as well as reduced NOx emissions and noise. For passengers, the A321XLR’s new Airspace cabin will provide the best travel experience, while offering seats in all classes with the same high-comfort as on a long-haul wide-body, with the low costs of a single-aisle aircraft. By the end of May 2023, the A320neo Family had accumulated more than 8,750 orders from  136 customers worldwide.

The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2029 but we plan to have four Airbus aircraft in operation before summer of 2025 and have now secured the lease of new A321LR aircraft with our long-term partner SMBC Aviation Capital Limited” said Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair’s CEO.

With the arrival of the Airbus aircraft Icelandair will retire its Boeing 757 aircraft which have been the backbone of the carrier's fleet since 1990 and enabled it to build an extensive route network making good use of Iceland's unique geographical location.

New market making agreement for Icelandair


Icelandair Group has entered into an agreement with Arion banki hf. for the market making of shares issued by the Company traded on the Nasdaq Iceland Stock Exchange. The purpose of the agreement is to maintain the liquidity of Icelandair's shares, and create a market price and the price formation of the shares in the most efficient and transparent manner.

The agreement stipulates that Arion banki shall submit daily bids and offers to buy and sell Icelandair’s shares in the trading system of the Icelandic Stock Exchange. Each bid and offer must be at least ISK 5,000,000 in market value of the issuer, at a rate set by Arion banki. However, such bids shall not vary by more than 3% from the last transaction price. The bid-ask spreads shall be determined by reference to the stock exchange's price step table as it stands at any given time so that the spread will be as close as possible to 1,5% but not less than 1,45%. Arion banki shall, however, be permitted to present bid and sell offers with a lower price range, e.g. due to circumstances arising from the stock exchange's price step table.

295,874 people travelled with Icelandair in April....

In April 2023, Icelandair‘s passengers were 295,874 compared to 241,914 in April last year, an increase of 22%. Capacity in April was 17% higher than last year, the airline has reported this week. 

Passengers on international flights were 273,191 compared to nearly 219,000 in April 2022, that's an increase of around 25%. Passengers to Iceland were 103,813 and 53,173 from Iceland. Via passengers were around 116,450. 

The airline says that 80% of its international flights were on time or very close to it and the average load factor was 83.4%. Despite increased competition, the load factor on North American routes was 85.3%, and improved by 10.4 ppt compared to April last year.

Domestically, the airline flew 22,683 people on its flights which were 77.2% full and 84% operated on time.

March traffic results show increases for Icelandair


Icelandair has just reported its In March 2023 traffic data which showed the airline carried 254,529 passengers compared to nearly 184,000 people in March 2022.

Passengers on international flights totalled 229,800, compared to 160,981 last March, an increase of 43%. Passengers to Iceland were 118,162 and 44,901 from Iceland. Via passengers were around 66,700. On-time performance on international flights was 82%. The load factor on international flights was 81.8%, an increase of 8.2 ppt year-on-year. The load factor was especially high on flights to and from North America, 86.7%. This is a record load factor for North America flights in March.  

Passengers on domestic flights were around 25 thousand, compared to 23 thousand in March 2022. On-time performance was 90%. The load factor on domestic flights was 76.3%.  

Sold block hours in the leasing operation increased by 20%. Freight measured in Freight Ton Kilometers increased by 20% compared to March last year, due to increased capacity with the introduction of a Boeing 767 widebody into the cargo fleet at the end of last year.

In March 2023 Icelandair carried 254,529 passengers

Icelandair to move away from Boeing to Airbus......


Icelandair is turning away from Boeing as it signs up for 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft to replace its ageing Boeing 757 fleet and long-term plans will see the carrier slowly transition away from Boeing 737 MAX fleet.

The deal the Icelandic carrier has signed with Airbus also has options for a further 12 aircraft and the planes are scheduled to start arriving in 2029.  However,  Icelandair is currently in negotiations for leasing four Airbus A321LR to arrive in 2025.   Further additions can be expected in the years thereafter. With the acquisition of the Airbus aircraft, Icelandair will complete the replacement of the Boeing 757.

The agreed purchase price of the 13 aircraft is confidential, however, is understood to be 20% less than the current list prices. Whilst the financing of the aircraft is yet to be determined, Icelandair will explore financing options closer to the delivery dates which is expected to include a sale and lease back deal with two aircraft leasing firms. 

The A321XLR and A321LR aircraft are part of the Airbus A320neo Family of narrow-body aircraft that provide an excellent range, fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. The implementation of the aircraft will reduce operating costs, further support Icelandair’s sustainability targets and offer exceptional customer experience through the aircraft design and unique features. The aircraft has around 190 seats in Icelandair’s layout. In comparison, the Boeing 757-200 aircraft has 183, whereas the 737 MAX 8 and the 737 MAX 9 have a passenger capacity of 160 and 178, respectively.

Icelandair carried 209,981 in January.

In January 2023, Icelandair carried nearly 210 thousand passengers, compared to just over 113,400 last year. Capacity in January was 93% of January 2020 levels, the last normal operating January before the pandemic, and 79% of 2019 levels.

Passengers on international flights were 191 thousand, compared to 102 thousand in January 2022, an increase of 88%. Passengers to Iceland were 75 thousand and from Iceland 47 thousand. Via passengers were around 69 thousand. On-time performance on international flights was 75%. On time performance and passenger numbers were affected by weather related disruptions in January. The load factor on international flights improved significantly from 59.5% in January 2022 to 74.6% in January this year.

Passengers on domestic flights were 18,500, compared to around 12 thousand in January 2022. On time performance was 84%. Load factor on domestic flights was 72.4%. Weather in Iceland caused disruption in the domestic network in January, affecting on time performance and passenger numbers.

Sold block hours in charter flights decreased by 3%. Freight measured in Freight Ton Kilometers increased by 31% compared to January last year. The increase in cargo is due to increased capacity with the introduction of a Boeing 767 widebody into the cargo fleet.
