airBaltic announces new route to Gran Canaria

Latvian government-owned airline airBaltic has confirmed that from the 1st of November this year it will have a new winter sun destination in its route network - Gran Canaria.

The service from Riga to Gran Canaria, the second most visited island in the Canary Islands after Tenerife will operate twice a week on the carriers Airbus A220 jets.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: “By adding Gran Canaria to our route network, we are delighted to expand our offering for the upcoming winter season. Gran Canaria will be one of the farthest destinations in airBaltic’s network. We are glad to connect Latvia to another sunny, exciting and well-demanded destination in the Canary Islands in addition to Tenerife, which was launched last year and has demonstrated outstanding passenger results.”

Gran Canaria is the third-largest island on the Canaries, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital Las Palmas boasts a colonial old town, a long sandy beach and a promenade peppered with bars and cafes. Make sure to try the national dish of the Canaries – Papas Arrugadas – small potatoes with hot sauce.

Head to the south of the island for a relaxing holiday on the beach – the climate is especially nice here, and the region is home to many popular resorts, such as Maspalomas, Playa de Ingles and Puerto Rico. The inland area and the north are rich in wild mountains, black volcanic sand beaches and fertile countryside with small villages – perfect for hiking and getting to know the local culture.
