Passenger lands plane after pilot falls ill

In The U.S. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a remarkable incident that took place in Florida on Tuesday.

A passenger with no flying experience was talked down to land a small aircraft by an air traffic controller after the pilot fell unconscious.

Darren Harrison got on the radio and informed the ground that a "serious situation" was occurring The conversation was caught on tape between Darren and the controller;

HARRISON: "I've got a serious situation here. My pilot has gone incoherent. I have no idea how to fly the aeroplane."

CONTROL: "ATC: 333 Lima Delta, Roger, what's your position?"

HARRISON: "I have no idea. I can see the coast of Florida in front of me but I have no idea."

CONTROL: "Maintain wings level and just try to follow the coast, either northbound or southbound. We're trying to locate you."

Robert Morgan, an air traffic controller at Palm Beach International Airport, came back from his break after a colleague informed him of the situation.  Morgan has over 20 years of experience in ATC and has been a flight instructor for a long time, and although he hadn’t flown the same model of  Cessna 208 aeroplane, he was able to give instructions to Darren, with the air of an instrument map.

Speaking to local media, Morgan recounted the story: “I knew the plane was flying like any other plane. I just knew I had to keep him calm, point him to the runway and tell him how to reduce the power so he could descend to land,"

In the recording, you can hear Morgan gently teaching  Darren to "push forward on the controls and descend at a very slow rate" on the approach for landing.

After the ordeal was brought to a safe conclusion the two met on the tarmac for a hub.  Whilst the nature of the medical emergency hasn’t been released yet,  its understood the pilot was in hospital having treatment.
