European Union ends mandatory face masks on planes yet some countries keep the safety measure in place.

This week the European Union ended its requirement for face masks to be worn on passenger planes throughout the block as a matter of law, thereby allowing the maskless to travel freely.   Yet, some nations are still requiring face masks to be worn to protect the flying public. Italy for example is one such country that has kept the ruling, which will be reviewed on 15 June. Spain is currently reviewing the situation and may make changes in the next few days.

Masks are still required on flights going to the following countries: Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands and Portugal. Although, for how long, is still yet to be decided.

Travel bodies and airlines have welcomed the move saying it will normalise travel again, however, they offer only limited evidence that having to wear a face mask actually affected passenger numbers in recent weeks. Demand has far outweighed air carriers' ability to provide an adequate service, many airlines have been forced to axe flights and reduce schedules, many due to staff shortages, including Delta, America, British Airways and SAS.
