212,132 passengers flew with Icelandair during September.

Icelandair September 2021 results 

The total number of passengers on international and domestic flights was over 212,000 compared to around 25,000 in September 2020. Thereof, the total number of passengers on international flights was around 191,000 compared to around 12,000 in September 2020. The number of passengers to Iceland was around 102,000 compared to around 6,000 in September 2020. The number of passengers from Iceland was around 23,000 compared to around 6,000 in September 2020. VIA passengers were around 65,000, compared to a few hundred in September 2020. On-time performance was 88%.

The load factor on international flights was 62% compared to 45% in September 2020. Increased uncertainty in relation to the spread of the Delta variant had a negative effect on the load factor in September. In addition, as in previous months, the deployment of Boeing 767 aircraft on several routes instead of smaller aircraft due to strong cargo demand still somewhat negatively impacted the passenger load factor. U.S. authorities recently confirmed that they plan on opening their borders to vaccinated European tourists.

The number of passengers on domestic flights was around 21,500 compared to 13,000 in September 2020. Year to date, the increase in domestic passengers has been 57% compared to 2020.

Icelandair

History

1937

Icelandair Group traces its roots to the year 1937 when a fledgling airline, Flugfélag Akureyrar, was founded at Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland.

 1943

The company moved its headquarters to the capital, Reykjavík, and changed its name to Flugfélag Íslands, which later assumed the international trade name Icelandair.

1944

Another important milestone was passed in 1944, when three young Icelandic pilots, returning from flight training in Canada, founded Loftleidir, later also known as Icelandic Airlines. Initially, both companies concentrated on Icelandic domestic air services.

1945

However, in 1945 Flugfélag Íslands made its first international flights to Scotland and Denmark. Loftleidir began international operations in 1947, and its pioneering low-fare services across the North-Atlantic commenced in 1953.

1973

In 1973 it was agreed to merge both Flugfélag Íslands and Loftleidir under a new holding company, Flugleidir. In October 1979 Flugleidir assumed all operating responsibilities of its two "parents", and decided to use Icelandair as its international trade name, only retaining the Flugleidir name in the Icelandic domestic market.

1987

On the 50th anniversary of the company in 1987 a breakthrough agreement was signed with the Boeing company to renew the fleet of Icelandair that served international flight with a new route network. A new generation of Boeing jets, Boeing 757-200 and 737-400 replaced the older fleet gradually from 1989 to 1993, and then a single type fleet of Boeing 757 was established in the years preceding 2003.

2003

In January 2003 Flugleidir became a holding company with 11 subsidiaries in the travel an tourist industry in Iceland, Icelandair being the largest subsidiary. In 2005 the name Flugleidir was changed to FL Group. The holding company announced its emphasis on investment. The corporations were divided into groups - the Icelandair Group being one of them.

2006

The board of directors of FL Group announced in Februay 2006 its intention to list Icelandair Group on ICEX. In December 2006 Icelandair Group was listed as ICEAIR on the Iceland Stock Exchange.

2009

In 2009 Icelandair Group started a financial restructuring, which consisted of debt restructuring through a mix of debt-to-equity conversions and extension of loan maturities.  Futhermore, certain non-cor assets were divested.  In an addition new equity in amount of ISK 4 billion was issued.

2011

In February 2011 announced Icelandair Group that the financial restructuring was completed.

2013

In February 2013 a contract with Boeing was signed, confirming an order of sixteen 737 MAX8 and 737 MAX9 aircraft, with an option to buy an additional eight aircraft. The delivery of the first aircraft is scheduled for early 2018. 

2017

Icelandair Group celebrated 80 years of operations on June 3 2017.

2019

In 2019 passengers in the international Route Network amounted to over 4.4 million, up from 1.3 million passengers in 2009.
