GDC Technics lays off 223 people after losing Air Force One job

GDC Technics confirmed on Friday that it was being forced to lay off 223 jobs after Boeing gave the subcontractor the sack from working on the new VC-25B aircraft, commonly known as Air Force One when the President is on board.

GDC Technics CEO Brad Foreman said it anticipated most operations at its Fort Worth headquarters would cease. It also would close its San Antonio facility where the Air Force One work was done.

Boeing had taken legal action against GDC, which it said was running into financial problems and had missed deadlines, causing millions in damages to Boeing and jeopardizing work critically important to the U.S. Air Force and the president.

GDC countersued Boeing, alleging that Boeing mismanagement caused the delays, that Boeing has failed in all its contractual obligations to the subcontractors, including failing to pay what GDC was due for its work. It also alleges that Boeing has damaged GDC’s reputation with the Pentagon.

Boeing had been awarded a $3.9 billion contract back in 2018 from the air force to convert two unwanted Boeing 747-8 aircraft into the new Air Force One jets. The plan was to deliver the jets in the autumn of 2024. However, Donald Trump threatened to remove the contract unless costs were cut when he was President, since then the project has been beset with issues, problems and snags.

Boeing says it is working on electrical power upgrades, the communication systems as well as the interiors of both aircraft at its facility in San Antonio.
