Eight people killed at FedEx depot near Indianapolis International Airport

A mass shooting at a FedEx facility very close to  Indianapolis International Airport has left eight people dead and a further seven injured, according to the local police department. 

Various news reports say witnesses heard several gunshots and one man said he had seen a man firing an automatic weapon.  It is understood the gunman was acting alone and the local police say there is no ongoing threat to the public as they believe the gunman has killed himself.  

"As officers arrived, they came into contact with an active shooting incident," a spokesperson  Indianapolis said, "After a preliminary search of the grounds, inside and out, we have located eight people at the scene with injuries consistent to gunshot wounds. Those eight were pronounced deceased here at the scene."

The shooting took place at approximately 23:00 local time which is 3:00am GMT, normal operations at the airport were unaffected. 

FedEx released a brief statement on the shooting.
