In a shock announcement, the Canadian holiday carrier Air Transat has decided to halt all operations until at least April 30th, with the exception of some repatriation flights.
The travel company says it is making the decision following the recent measures announced by the Canadian government. In a statement, the firm said "We know that this news is causing a great deal of concern among our customers currently at destination or who planned to travel in the coming weeks, and we’d like to assure them that we’re doing everything we can to ensure that this situation beyond our control has the least impact possible on them. That includes making sure that we have a sufficient number of repatriation flights and available seats to return all our customers back home as soon as possible."
Jean-Marc Eustache, President and Chief Executive Officer said: "We are putting in place the measures requested by the Canadian government, including not travelling to the South. This forces us to temporarily suspend all our flights, including to Europe. - We obviously share the government's objective to protect Canadians from COVID-19, including the new variants, and this is what all of our personnel have been doing in recent months, particularly onboard our aircraft, with a comprehensive program of adapted sanitary measures."
The travel firm has reiterated its request to the federal government for more sector-specific financial assistance as it battles to cope with the latest shutdown. It said, 'the airline industry is highly competitive, and international carriers from other countries have benefited from significant support measures from their governments since the beginning of the pandemic. This is creating a considerable imbalance that has hurt the competitiveness of Canada's airlines for months and threatens their survival. Moreover, the entire Canadian economy will be deprived of the vital and strategic contribution of the airline and aeronautics industry when the recovery comes.'

If you’re currently in the South on an all-inclusive package, please speak with your destination representative if you have any questions about your return flight.
If you haven’t left yet for your trip (roundtrip flight) scheduled between now and April 30, 2021, inclusively:
Your booking will be cancelled, and you’ll receive a refund for the amount paid, in the original method of payment. You don’t need to contact us to request this refund; it will automatically be applied to your file. If you had booked with a travel credit, the refund will be in the form of a travel credit.
We’d like to remind you that all passengers aged five and up must now present proof of a negative COVID-19 test (see types of molecular tests accepted) taken less than 72 hours before departure in order to travel to Canada. Between January 31 and February 13, 2021, we will operate our flights exclusively to return our customers back home. Our sales will, therefore, be closed until all our customers at the destination whose return flights were cancelled have been rebooked on another flight.
