British Airways axes flights from Gatwick for lockdown

The UK's British Airways has confirmed that it will axe flights from London Gatwick Airport following the introduction of the second lockdown in the UK.

BA says it will be putting a pause on operations out of the Sussex airport for the duration of the lockdown, therefore they should be reinstated in early December.  "Following the government’s announcement of a new national lockdown for England last Saturday, we have been urgently reviewing our schedule for November," the carrier said in a press statement.

"Our focus is on keeping crucial air links open – bringing home the thousands of customers currently abroad, transporting vital goods, and ensuring people who are permitted to travel in and out of the UK for work, education and other reasons stipulated by the UK government, can continue to do so."

TTG and Sky News are reporting that BA is also looking to take advantage of the newly extended furlough scheme by adding hundreds of staff to it while the lockdown continues.
