Wizz Air to open its first Russian base in Saint Petersburg.

Wizz Air, the airline that wants to ban business class travel, has confirmed it will open a base in Russia this September.    The budget carrier says it will open a base in Saint Petersburg, which 1 Airbus A320 based at the city's Pulkovo Airport. 

To go along with this new opening,  the carrier that made huge profits from operating repatriation flights and got a massive cash injection from the UK Government, will introduce five new services from the airport from 18 September 2020. 


The Airbus A320 aircraft will be operating flights to Salzburg in Austria, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - from 18 September.  A service to Norway - Oslo will start a day later and will operate on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Copenhagen will also get a direct flight from the 19th and the service flies on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Stockholm Skavsta, Sweden also starts on 19th and will operate on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Wizz Air will also start a service to  Malta, running on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air Group said the new base was the carrier's commitment to offering Russians low-fares "travel opportunities." from its "base at Pulkovo Airport.". "By adding five new routes in Saint Petersburg and keeping ourselves to the highest standards of our sanitizing protocols, we are confident that Wizz Air’s ultra-low fares will make travel affordable to ever more passengers."

Leonid Sergeev, CEO of Pulkovo Airport operator Northern Capital Gateway LLC, commented:“We are delighted that Wizz Air strengthens its positions in St. Petersburg. Pulkovo is the first airport in Russia, which offers foreign airlines unique market conditions. The complex of unprecedented measures includes the seventh freedom traffic rights regime, flexible tariff management and free e-visas for the tourists from 53 countries to visit St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region."
