Qatar Airways to cut nearly 20% of global workforce

The Doha based Qatar Airways looks likely to shed nearly 20% of its global workforce after the massive drop in travel demand caused by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The airlines CEO Akbar Al Baker told the BBC on Wednesday that “We have no other alternative,”  but to permanently lay off some 9250 staff from its 46,000+ workforce.

"The unparalleled impact on our industry has caused significant challenges for all airlines and we must act decisively to protect the future of our business," a Qatar Airways spokesperson has said "As a result, Qatar Airways can confirm that the airline will make a number of roles redundant due to the impact of Covid-19."
