AirAsia announces resumption of domestic flights

Despite warnings from the World Health organization, AirAsia as confirmed it will resume its scheduled domestic flight operations from April 29th.

The budget airline group says it will start flights in Malaysia on 29th April 2020, this will then be followed by its domestic operations in Thailand on 1st May.  The Philippines flights will also resume on 1st May.  India will be next to start flights on 4th May and then the airline group will recommence Indonesian flights from 7th May 2020). 

The resumption of services will initially be for key selected domestic routes, subject to government approvals and will then be gradually increased and then international destinations around the network will be introduced, once the situation improves and governments lift borders and travel restrictions. 

Even while there are travel bans in place,  the airline has already opened up the flights for booking via its website and mobile app, yet over one hundred thousand customers are still waiting for refunds from the carrier. 

President of AirAsia Group, Bo Lingam said: "We are very pleased to be able to fly again and to serve our guests starting with domestic routes, and hope to resume full operations as soon as possible."

The airline will not be keeping the middle seat free, as many other global carriers are doing, yet it asks passengers to use precautionary measures including wearing a mask and practising social distancing.
