US President Donald Trump suspends travel from Europe to US

In a move that has stunned European leaders, the US President, Donald Trump has announced the introduction of sweeping new travel restrictions on people coming from Europe in a fruitless bid to combat Coronavirus COVID-19.

Trump said the restrictions are "strong but necessary"  and would apply to 26 European countries and would not apply to the UK.    "To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe," Mr Trump said direct rom the Oval Office on Wednesday evening.

"The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight," he said and the new rules would not apply to American nationals.

The ban has been met with incredulity by many political leaders throughout Europe,  advising that there was no significant scientific data to support such a ban would actually help the US fight the spread of the virus.
