East Midlands Airport to welcome children for magical Christmas trip this weekend and looks for 100+ more staff

East Midlands Airport (EMA) staff will offer a very warm festive welcome to deserving children and their families as they begin their winter wonderland adventure to Lapland on Saturday 7 December thanks to When You Wish Upon a Star.

The magical trip transports courageous children living with a life-threatening illness to Lapland, away from hospitals and appointments and into a magical world filled with Christmas spirit.

Previously chartered by Thomas Cook, this year the flight will be operated by TUI who will whisk children and their families to a winter wonderland.

The yuletide trip starts with a party at the departure gate with refreshments, face painting and even a magician adding some real magic to the day. This year the magical plane ride will be operated by TUI who’s crew will transform the aircraft with Christmas decorations to bring the festive spirit on-board.

After a busy day of sleigh rides, Siberian huskies, horse and carriage rides and reindeers, the very special group of guests are guided to a hotel, where they will meet Santa Claus and receive a special Christmas gift.

Andy Tyler-Smith, East Midlands Airport’s Customer Services and Security Director, says: "We're delighted to offer a warm welcome to so many children and their families for this very special festive flight to Lapland. Our staff love being involved in this heart-warming occasion which brings the true meaning of Christmas to life."

East Midlands Airport recruiting over 100 security and car parking roles

The first round of interviews is on Thursday 12 December, with more to follow. Once candidates have been selected, training will start in January ready for the busy summer season which begins on 1 April.

Each year, the airport increases its head count for the summer months but the vacancies that it is recruiting for now are permanent and successful candidates will be employed all year round.

EMA employs over 650 people in a wide-range of jobs, from back office administrative functions to frontline operational roles. Almost 5 million passengers fly through EMA each year and, with it being home to the UK’s largest dedicated air cargo operation, the airport is open 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year. Security and car park colleagues work on shifts around the clock every day of the year and play a vital role in ensuring people and goods get to and from their destinations smoothly.

Applicants need not have any previous experience of working in security or car parking roles but do need to demonstrate excellent customer service skills. A full Level 1 aviation security qualification will be provided.

Felicia Farrimond, Senior Recruitment & Vetting Co-ordinator (Security), says: “As an international gateway and one of the region’s most high-profile businesses, East Midlands Airport is a fascinating place to work. As the face of the airport, security and car park teams play a key role in ensuring all customers’ experience of using the airport is a positive one. With so much growth happening across the airport site and nearby, this is an exciting time to be working at EMA.”
