London Stansted celebrates successful year supporting the local community

In the week when over 800 jobseekers attended London Stansted’s 2019 jobs fair, the airport has revealed nearly 1,000 people secured on-site employment in the last year thanks to the work of the Stansted Airport Employment and Skills Academy.

The record employment success is the key highlight of the airport’s latest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report which outlines London Stansted’s progress in managing its environmental, economic and social performance across the last 12 months.

The report also gives details on how the airport, the east of England’s biggest single-site employer, approaches corporate responsibility and its successful partnerships with community groups, schools and colleges, the public sector and environmental stakeholders.

In addition to the success in helping jobseekers find employment, the report also showcases the continuing attraction of the airport’s Aerozone Education Centre, which has now welcomed 16,000 young people, and the thriving Stansted Airport College which opened last year as the first purpose-built further education college at a UK airport and is already operating at its 500-student capacity.

The College last month unveiled concept designs for a phase two development to meet rising demand and create a dedicated education zone on the existing site, bring together the College, Aerozone and Employment and Skills Academy.

The full report can be found here  but below are some of the key achievements under each of the three main areas it covers:

Zero Carbon Airport - reducing reliance on fossil fuels and how the airport works with on-site companies to reduce waste and emissions.

3,000 silver birch saplings to celebrate Biodiversity Week
100% of waste donated from landfill
Replaced 5,450 airfield lights with LED technology
Opportunity for all - creating a quality place to work.

964 people placed into employment through the airport’s Employment and Skills Academy
Opening of Stansted Airport College – the first on-site further education college at any UK airport
13,391 young people’s education directly supported, a 16% increase on last year.
Local voices - building trust with the local community.

7,191 volunteering hours donated by 360 airport staff
£256,000 donated to 204 local community groups
£2 million generated for local SMEs at annual Meet the Buyers event

The report was unveiled at London Stansted’s latest jobs fair as companies across the airport look to fill 400 vacancies this winter. Dozens of airport firms were on hand to showcase a range of roles from cabin crew all the way up to senior management positions.

Companies and organisations attending included Swissport, Jet2.com, Ryanair, Essex Police, Hilton Hotel, UK Border Force, World Duty Free, Blue Handling, Titan Airways, MAG and FedEx.
