Delta earns high marks on sustainability from four organisations

The leaders of US mega-carrier Delta has always adopted a certain aire of superiority when talking of operational responsibly and sustainably. Now they have cause to be proud, as its efforts have recently been recognised recently by organisations from Atlanta to London to Zurich.

Here's a rundown:

1.      Dow Jones Sustainability Index: For the ninth consecutive year, Delta has earned a spot in the transportation section of the DJSI North America Index. More than 600 companies were invited to participate in the index evaluation, which included a review of each company's corporate governance, social efforts and environmental strategy.

Manjit Jus of Zurich-based RobecoSAM, which conducted the study, said, "We congratulate Delta for being included in the DJSI North America. The SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment has again raised the bar in identifying those companies best-positioned to address future sustainability challenges and opportunities."

2.      Environmental-Finance.com: The U.K.-based website reporting on sustainable investment named Delta as having the Best Corporate Offsetting Programme. Delta was the first U.S. airline to offer carbon offsets to customers and is the only airline to cap greenhouse gas emissions at 2012 levels by purchasing carbon offsets ahead of a requirement to cap international emissions at 2019-2020 levels. Since 2013, Delta has voluntarily purchased more than 12 million verified carbon offsets from projects such as the Guatemala Conservation Coast that verifies its emissions reductions by preventing deforestation. Read more about this project.

"Their (Delta's) commitment to sustainable development is second to none," the website wrote.

3.      FTSE4Good Index: Delta was named to The FTSE4Good Index Series, which rates companies demonstrating strong environmental, social and governance practices. London-based FTSE Group compiles responsible investment indexes designed to help investors identify companies that meet global corporate responsibility standards.

4.      Atlanta Metro Chamber of Commerce: Delta was honoured by our hometown business leaders for advancing environmental sustainability, winning the Moving the Needle (transportation) category among businesses in the ninth-largest metro area in the U.S.

"Making the world better is at the core of our mission at Delta, fueling our commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible governance," said Alison Lathrop, Delta's Managing Director - Global Environment, Sustainability and Compliance. "It's gratifying to see others are recognizing the progress made by our 80,000 employees. There's much more to come."

Delta's sustainability strategy drives accountability and evaluates areas of opportunity across the business to lower its environmental impact. Since 2005, the airline has reduced its jet fuel consumption, leading to an 11% decrease in emissions as Delta works toward its long-term goal of reducing emissions by 50% by 2050. Most recently, Delta invested $2 million in a feasibility study of a biofuel production facility and flew its first of 20 carbon-neutral delivery flights using biofuels and carbon offsets this summer. Delta has capped its carbon emissions at 2012 levels by purchasing offsets and also removed a variety of single-use plastic items on board, from amenity kits and from Delta Sky Clubs.
