Ryanair to close bases in Canary Islands

The low-fare-high-fee airline Ryanair has announced that it will be closing its bases in the Canary Island and no amount of strikes by Spanish staff will make it changes its mind.

The airline issued a statement on social media on Friday confirming the closure, of which it blames on the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft, although the Max 8 wasn't scheduled to be based in the Canary Island initially.

The Spanish unions SITCPLA and USO have called strikes on 1st and 2nd September in protest over the closures as well as for better terms and conditions, however, the carrier says the strikes are 'pointless' and 'unjustified'.

At this stage, the airline has cancelled 14 flights, with the possibility of more being axed in the coming days and effected passengers had already been contacted.
