Delta gives nod to young fliers with a family-friendly augmented reality gaming app

The global airline offers AR app as part of an effort to give kids more options to spend time across a journey

Delta customers can take to the skies from the palm of their hands this summer with Delta’s new Cloud Crew app – an augmented reality digital game now in testing and available via iOS app store in select markets.

During the initial test, users can soar through the air by means of a virtual aeroplane – with their real-life settings as the background. Players will collect miles and bonus points, aiming for new high scores that keep kids – and even adults – engaged with an easy-to-use navigation interface.  Users can choose a Delta-branded aeroplane or that of the airline’s joint-venture partner Virgin Atlantic.

"We’re excited to introduce the latest in travel entertainment that we think our young fliers – and the adults they travel with – will love,” said Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Director — Onboard Product and Customer Experience. “It’s all about building on the wave of entertainment options Delta has pioneered to give customers more options to spend their time on the go, and building a connection with even the littlest among us, and their families.”

Cloud Crew is available for download in the U.S., U.K. and The Netherlands, with plans to gauge customer feedback before expanding worldwide with future versions of the game.

Delta is giving another nod to young fliers by offering customers on three daily flights departing Orlando a take-home plush toy version of the Delta aeroplane featured in the app, through Oct. 11, 2019.

Dimbiloglu said that in keeping with Delta’s approach to listening to customers, responding with adjustments and listening again, the airline will use feedback from the app and plush toys to further enhance the travel experience for customers of all ages.

Putting a focus on Delta’s next generation of loyal customers is the latest in a series of industry-leading efforts by Delta to make the in-flight experience more enjoyable and keep young fliers entertained on the go this summer. As part of our industry-leading, free in-flight entertainment system, Delta Studio, children can access a “Sky Kids” portal with kid-friendly entertainment options. The “Sky Kids” portal is available on any Delta flight equipped with seatback entertainment screens. Kids programming can also be streamed to a personal electronic device.
