Icelandair saw passenger numbers up by 19% in April

Icelandair seems to have received a bonus from the demise of Iceland's other budget carrier, WOW air as it saw passenger numbers increase during April. The total number of passengers on international flights was 318,310 in April and increased by 19%.

The capacity increase was 8% and the load factor was 83.7% compared to 77.2% in April last year. The market with passengers travelling to Iceland was Icelandair’s largest market in April, accounting for 40% of the total number of passengers.  The number of passengers in this market increased by 39 thousand from last year or 44%.  The number of passengers also increased significantly on the home market from Iceland, or by 24 thousand which corresponds 56% increase between years.  The number of passengers on the N-Atlantic market decreased by 13 thousand or 9% compared to April last year.  Arrival On-Time-Performance in the route network was 67% compared to 76% om April last year. The reason is considerable flight disruptions due to two days bad weather conditions in Iceland.

The number of passengers on domestic and regional flights were 20 thousand, decreasing by 20% compared to April last year.  Flights to Belfast and Aberdeen stopped mid-May 2018, explaining the reduction in the number of passengers. The load factor was 69.0% and increased by 8.4 percentage points compared to last year. The number of sold block hours in charter flights decreased by 26% between years, due to fewer projects than at the same time last year and aircraft maintenance.  Freight increased by 18%. The number of sold room nights at the Company’s Hotels was up by 11% from last year. The room utilisation was 69.2% compared to 70.7% in April 2018.

Whilst the airline still has Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft on order, the airline is considering a long term switch to become an all-Airbus airline in future, although no date has yet been given for the move.
