American Airlines Honored for Inclusion

For the fourth year in a row, American Airlines has been named among the Best-of-the-Best Corporations for Inclusion by the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the business voice of the LGBT community, in collaboration with its partners in the National Business Inclusion Consortium (NBIC).

“We are thrilled to be recognized by the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and the National Business Inclusion Consortium for our commitment to inclusion and diversity,” said Patrick O’Keeffe, Senior Vice President of People for American. “As the world’s largest airline, our business is fundamentally about connecting people and communities, making the world a smaller place so we begin to look at the world around us differently and celebrate what makes every person unique.”

Last month, American Airlines was recognized for the 17th year in a row as a leader among U.S. companies in LGBTQ workplace policies by receiving the highest rating from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in the 2019 Corporate Equality Index (CEI). American was the only airline to achieve a perfect score when the CEI launched in 2002 and continues to be one of only a handful of corporations to have received it every year since.

American was also the first major airline to launch a dedicated LGBTQ sales team and include LGBTQ-owned businesses in its supplier diversity program. American has opposed discriminatory legislation proposed in states with significant numbers of American Airlines team members and customers. American also serves on state advocacy coalitions such as Texas Competes to express why discriminatory legislation is bad for business and will negatively impact American’s ability to recruit and retain team members.

“It’s not just a metaphor to say American Airlines has taken the work of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce to new heights,” said NGLCC Cofounder and President Justin Nelson. “American’s advocacy for diverse communities at-large makes them the ideal fit for the coveted National Business Inclusion Consortium Best-of-the-Best Corporation for Inclusion distinction. American Airlines has helped raise the bar on inclusion for its fellow top corporations nationwide by ensuring every community not only has a seat at the table but is welcomed in every seat on every flight and in every office that American operates.”

The Best-of-the-Best designation honours corporations for their commitment to diverse team members and business owners, which includes LGBT, people of colour, women and people with disabilities. Only companies achieving industry-leading results across all diverse segments are eligible to receive the prestigious Best-of-the-Best designation from the NBIC, whose members include the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. (USBC), the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAAC), the U.S. Business Leadership Network (USBLN), the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and WEConnect International.
