Happy birthday Ukraine International Airlines

Happy Birthday UIA

Today, Ukraine International Airlines - UIA celebrates its 30th anniversary.  On November 25, 1992, the company operated its first flight from the home base of Kyiv to  London and thus today the company considers this date as the birthday of UIA.

Over 30 years, the company has carried more than 60 million passengers over almost 600,000 flights and whilst it is not able to do that at the moment, the airline looks forward to the day it can return to the skies above Ukraine.

In a social media post, the carrier said "We are sincerely grateful to the passengers who have chosen UIA for their travels over all these years. We wish to welcome everyone aboard UIA planes again as soon as possible in peaceful Ukraine. We congratulate the large family of UIA employees and partners. We are confident that our company will soon return to full-fledged work and cooperation.

Unfortunately, the celebration of this important day for UIA is rather muted as the entire aviation of industry of Ukraine is overshadowed by the military invasion by Russia of Ukraine and the ongoing war.

UIA says "We believe that the civil aviation of Ukraine will be revived after the victory and will continue its development as an essential driving force of the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine."

The airline continues to function on a much-reduced scale during these dark days for the nation as it offers various charter and humanitarian flights as well as "wet leasing" of aircraft to other carriers.

Ukraine International Airlines – UIA (Ukraine)

Air101 says congratulations on this anniversary to every one of the UIA family and we wish you well for the future and hope that you'll soon be back in the air again, operating flights from a free and peaceful Ukraine.

Ukraine Airlines continues to operate despite the war.

Ukraine Airlines has continued to operate, albeit with limited special and charter flights despite the Russian invasion and war currently decimating the country.

In recent weeks, the airline continue to support flight activity outside of Ukraine.  At the beginning of the month, Fly UIA provided transportation for the Estonian National Basketball Team and its fans to the qualifying tournament in Tel Aviv.

And in the same period, a joint charter programme was launched with the Polish tour operator Itaka. This will see a Boeing 737-900 UR-PSL fly both from the base in Katowice and from other cities in Poland -  Warsaw, Krakow, and Rzeszow. The UIA aircraft will provide service to a number of European tourist destinations (Malaga, Arrecife, Antalya, Tenerife, Tirana, Las Palmas and Djerba).  The airline has also operated flights for Latvian carrier airBaltic.

Martin Gauss, airBaltic Chief Executive Officer: “Ukraine International Airlines has been a reliable long-term partner of airBaltic. Maintenance of the Boeing 737 as part of the airBaltic fleet will be carried out by UIA foreign contractors. Ukraine International Airlines to position 737 to Poland for evacuation flights.....

UIA plans to position a Boeing 737-900 to Poland.

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the war continues, the international airline of Ukraine is planning to position one of its aircraft to Poland to operate evacuation flights for Ukrainian citizens fleeing the horrendous onslaught from barbaric Russian forces.

UIA says it aims to provide evacuation flights for Ukrainians from Lodz (LCJ) and Wroclaw (WRO) airports on a Boeing 737-900. The flights can accommodate up to 215 passengers. Plus they are also calling for humanitarian organizations to send them requests for shipments of humanitarian cargo to these airports.  The plane can take up to 18 000 kgs of cargo with a total volume of 103 m3.

The airline is also offering aircraft for lease and hire as it seeks to earn money for the beleaguered nation as it battles for its very existence against the might of Russia.

In another move, Russia has banned UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and a number of other key politicians from entering Russia over what it calls the UK's "hostile" stance on the war in Ukraine.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace,  Home Secretary Priti Patel, The Chancellor Rishi Suna, Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor, and Secretary of State for Justice Dominic Raab, Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps, Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey, former British Prime Minister Theresa May and First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon have all been banned from entering Russia. The leader of the opposition Sir Keir Rodney Starmer hasn't been included on the list despite his previous remarks regarding the war and Putin.

Ukraine International Airlines offering aircraft and crew for wet leasing deals to other airlines so it can continue to support the country during war.

Ukraine International Airlines has offered its aircraft and crews to other airlines that may need extra capacity in order that it can continue to support the country in this time of war.

The airline issued a statement saying that during this time of martial law following the closure of Ukrainian airspace, it wanted to continue some form of operation. The intention is to ensure the carrier continues to contribute to the economic stability of Ukraine.

Because of the airspace closure, UIA has aircraft sitting idle and ready to operate. The statement on social media says the airline "now has the opportunity to offer airlines and partners to join the economic support of Ukraine, taking advantage of the availability of UIA aircraft for charter and humanitarian flights outside Ukraine and concluding “wet leasing” agreements. Using our aircraft, you support UIA operations during the war and help pay taxes to the state budget of Ukraine."

It also detailed how the airline successfully passes periodic audits for compliance with modern IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) operational safety requirements, covering all aspects of the airline's activities.

Contact details on its LinkedIn  post  and on its website

The UIA fleet includes some 25 or so aircraft, including  1 wide-body long-haul aircraft Boeing 777-200ER, 1 long-haul wide-body aircraft Boeing 767-300ER, 16 medium-haul Boeing-737 New Generation, 5 medium-haul Embraer-E190 and 2 medium-haul Embraer E195s.

Ukrainian hospitality, modern fleet, internationally trained and certified crew, as well as ground personnel, ensure that UIA operated in many international markets.

It is unclear if this offer will attract many customer airlines, especially as its 737 fleet are mostly the 800 model, the same as that of the China Eastern Airlines plane that crashed yesterday morning. However, the Embraer aircraft could supplement operations for a number of European airlines and it would be good to see them flying again. Plus the country will need so much support to not only carry on putting on a heroic fight against the Russian invaders but also to rebuild in the future.

Ukraine International Airlines extends flight suspension until middle of April

Taking into account the current military-political situation, Ukraine International Airlines has extended the suspension of regular and charter flights from/to Ukraine until 23:59 April 15, 2022.

UIA emphasizes that it stays in touch and will continue to stay in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine. Given the difficult situation under martial law, the air carrier draws attention to the possibility of forced delays and feedback complications on the service channels of communication with passengers and counts on understanding.

Some feel even that date is very optimistic as many airports in Ukraine have been either badly damaged or destroyed by the invading Russian forces. With little appetite from NATO or European nations to operate a no-fly zone or even enter the conflict with loaned aircraft, there seems no end in sight to the conflict.

UIA halting Poland flights.

Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) has announced that it will not be flying to Poland. The reason for this decision, the airline says was the situation that arose due to the need to fly over the territory of Belarus, which is now not considered safe by many European airlines.

UIA  informed passengers it would carefully analyze the market for both point-to-point passengers travelling from/to Poland and transfer passengers travelling with a change in Poland or Ukraine. If the demand for the UIA network is restored, the flights will be resumed.

For tickets with actually cancelled flights, the following actions are possible:

Change of travel date for UIA flights without payment of a penalty according to the fare in the original class during the ticket period, subject to removal of airport restrictions.

Ukraine International Airlines boss Yevhenii Dykhne sends message to passengers

The CEO of Ukraine International Airlines,  Yevhenii Dykhne has sent a message to all the carriers passengers telling of the trials and tribulations the airline has gone through in the past tumultuous year.  Dykhne detailed how the airline had been in mourning since the January tragedy when flight PS752 was shot out of the sky by an Iranian missile, which was soon followed by the coronavirus pandemic.
Here is the full message:

Dear Passengers,
As we approach the end of 2020, a year like no other, we need to look back and see what 2020 has taught us and how it has made us stronger.

2020 was a year of success, trials and tribulations like no year ever before, and also a year of sorrow for UIA. The most important lesson that we have learned is that the road obeys the one who walks forward despite what life presents.

We have been in sorrow since January, from the loss of family, friends and colleagues that were onboard flight PS752 from Tehran to Kyiv, when Iranian military missiles took the lives of 167 passengers and 9 crew members. That tragedy has divided the entire airline into “before” and “after”.

Ukrainian International Airlines to use drone technology for aircraft inspections

Ukrainian MRO company MAUtechnic, Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) and Luftronix, Inc have jointly conducted drone-based scans of UIA's Boeing 737-800 aircraft in Kyiv. All scans were conducted using Luftronix's custom-built drones with high-precision navigation systems and high-quality scanning equipment, and the Luftronix Orchestrator software for scan planning, flight operations and data analysis.

Why did the Ukraine International Airline's 737-800 crash in Iran?

Photo AP
There were no survivors from a Ukraine Airlines Boeing 737-800NG which crashed on Wednesday 8th January near Tehran International Airport.

Flight PS752 took off from Tehran just after 6am local time,  it had climbed away from the airport to around 8000 feet but then flight data seems to have come to a sudden halt three minutes into the flight. Five minutes after that the aircraft came down and a scene of complete devastation greeted rescue workers and first responders at the crash site.

The flight to Kyiv was carrying 176 people on board at the time of the crash, according to Ukrainian officials, 82 of those were Iranians, 63 came from Canada, 11 people including 9 crew were Ukrainian nationals. 10 were from Sweden, 4 from Afghanistan, 3 from the UK and 3 Germans.

Yet even before the human remains of those people had been collected, speculation as to the cause of the disaster began to swirl at record speeds and in all directions with little signs of slowing down.  At first, it was believed and widely reported that the jet had been bought down by a missile fired by Iran during an attack on US-based in Iraq. These persisted for some time despite the fact that the events took place hours apart and not in the same area from where the rocket attacks were launched from. Some aviation commentators jumped on that bandwagon,  highlighting some images of parts of the fuselage showed "obvious projectile holes" indicating it was a definite "shootdown event". Yet, the very same images when enlarged seem to change those holes into rocks. Even if some holes, these can be caused by a number of things, such as an uncontained engine failure, only a forensic like examination will tell for sure.

Iranian officials stipulated that it was a technical fault with the aircraft that caused the tragedy, an engine problem most probable.  However, these were hotly disputed by Ukrainian Airlines, saying the aircraft was one of its best,  just three years old and had its most recent maintenance check on Monday of this week. "The flight was operated on a Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft (registration UR-PSR). The aircraft was built in 2016 and delivered directly to the airline from the manufacturer. The last scheduled maintenance of the aircraft took place on 06 January 2020." read a statement by the carrier.  Ihor Sosnovsky, UIA Vice President Operations doesn't believe crew error was responsible for the disaster either, saying "Given the crew's experience, error probability is minimal. We do not even consider such a chance."

Ryanair to face a legal challenge in Ukraine

Ukraine’s largest airline is about to launch new legal action over the entry of Irish low-cost high-fee carrier Ryanair into the market should complaints over airport slots are not listened to, news agency Reuters is reporting today.

UK Skyscanner banner 468x60

Ukrainian government officials had made overtures to Ryanair over the last few years to entice the carrier to shake up the aviation industry as well as allowing the Ukrainian government to show a more pro-business, pro-western stance. However, Ukraine International Airlines, part-owned by Ihor Kolomoisky, a very wealthy Ukrainian business mogul says the authorities in Kiev have given exceptional support to the Irish airline yet have been less than positive towards local airlines.

Only last year Ryanair said “not yet a sufficiently mature or reliable business location” of Ukraine after walking away from talks with the authorities following Ukraine International Airlines starting legal action. Yet, only towards the end of last month, Ryanair proclaimed its arrival on the Ukrainian airline scene, not only with flights to Ukraine but with 10 new Kiev routes to Barcelona, Bratislava, Gdansk, Krakow, London Stansted, Poznan, Stockholm, Vilnius, Warsaw and Wroclaw and 5 new Lviv routes to Dusseldorf, Krakow, London Stansted, Memmingen and Warsaw.
