Runway Excursion at East Midlands Airport

For a short period, East Midlands Airport was forced to close on Wednesday evening due to a runway excursion by a West Air 737 cargo aircraft.

The aircraft appears to have been vacating the runway when it veered off course and entered the gravel verge at the side of the runway.  No-one was injured in the incident and a spokesperson for East Midlands Airport said that the runway was not blocked and there is no fire, but flights are unable to go into and out of the airport while the fire crews and a tug dealt with the situation.

The airport reopened shortly after and an investigation is underway. Nobody from West was available for comment.
